Family Therapy

Family Therapy is about supporting people with mental health struggles and it is radically different from other therapies. Family Therapy is inclusive and considerate of the family and other key relationships (systems) in people’s lives. It focuses on patterns of interaction, system dynamics and the environment of an individual in conjunction with how they are presenting.  Family Therapy deals with both the inside of the individual (Depression, Anxiety, anger, sadness) and the wider system (work, social, family).

Family Therapy is perfect for:

  • Families wanting a closer relationship to each other – peaceful and connective

  • You want to gain an understanding of why you (and your family) are behaving the way you are

  • Learning about your strengths and how to make useful changes

  • Safe expression of difficult thoughts and emotions

  • If you want to stop yelling!

  • Any situation that is maintaining Depression, Anxiety, grief, anger, conflict, marital issues, substance use or any other mental illness

  • Understanding and communicating with your child, teenager, intimate partner or parent

let’s talk results

  • I will not segregate you from your system- everyone is invited into the room

  • What am I responsible for? Let’s explore what healthy boundaries look like

  • Teach you how to be present and hold the space, even when you are scared or in crisis

  • To accept the dysfunction of your family and what this means for you

  • Exploration of your family’s interactional and intergenerational dynamics

  • How those generational dynamics are being replicated

  • How to break the pattern of interaction, even after the session has finished

  • To heal any mental, emotional or psychological problems currently tearing you apart

the tough stuff:

  • A Family Therapist has a different perspective on treatment than an individual therapist.

  • Family Therapy can be difficult as your perceptions may be altered, leading to some uncomfortable emotions.

  • Some family members may disengage or deny unhealthy patterns.

  • Family Therapy cannot make situations disappear nor is it a one size fits all.

  • Managing multiple family members in one session can be tricky, which means at times, one person may feel “left out” or that the therapist doesn’t like them.  Having the courage to speak up when this happens, is paramount to the relationship between the individual and the therapist.

  • If you attend a session expecting I will do all the work, you will be disappointed in the results.

  • Exploring family issues and generational patterns of interaction can be painful.  It is important to acknowledge family members will handle this in different ways.

  • Time….. is key.
